Oktoberfest Event Supports Race for Every Child
Jennifer and Josh Dix first learned about Children’s National Health System through their friends Campbell and Grace Smith. The Smiths’ younger son was born with a heart condition and needed open-heart surgery six days after he was born. “We saw the amazing care that he received, and we were blown away by the level of support Children’s National provides kids and families,” Josh said.
When Campbell asked the Dix family to get involved with the Race for Every Child, they enthusiastically jumped in. “We have two healthy children and are very fortunate to not need specialized care,” Josh said. “But we are so grateful that a wonderful hospital focusing on children’s needs is right here in DC. It’s comforting to know that it’s right here in our backyard.”
Instead of just sending emails to ask friends and family members to support their race team, the Dix family decided to host an Oktoberfest fundraiser. The event attracted 60 people and raised nearly $3,500 for the Grateful Family Team for the Race for Every Child. “The event was a great success, and we had a great time doing it,” Josh said. “It was the perfect way to contribute to the hospital and to hang out with friends at the same time.”
Sept. 29 is the last day to sign up for the Oct. 3 race. You can also make a donation at www.raceforeverychild.org or directly to the Grateful Family Team, made up of children, parents, and family members who have received care at Children's National.
