Diana and Stephen Goldberg Receive Prize in Philanthropy
Children’s National on Feb. 24 honored Diana and Stephen Goldberg as the recipients of the 2016 Joseph E. Robert, Jr. Prize in Philanthropy. The award recognizes the Goldbergs’ dedication to children and families in the Washington area and around the world. Their financial support and personal leadership have directly improved healthcare for children in underserved areas through the Diana L. and Stephen A. Goldberg Center for Community Pediatric Care.
“The Goldbergs’ generosity and leadership has transformed the healthcare landscape in Washington, DC,” said Dr. Kurt Newman, president and CEO of Children’s National. “At a time when other hospitals were looking at increasing their financial stability by focusing only on hospital-based services, it was the Goldbergs who gave us the opportunity to focus on the health needs of our entire community.”
The Goldberg Center has been recognized as a national model for community-based care. It focuses on comprehensive primary care, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment through seven primary health centers in underserved communities and a mobile health program. Ms. Goldberg has been involved with Children’s National for more than 30 years, has served on every Children’s National board, and served twice as chairman of the board. She also co-chaired the health system’s “Giant Steps” campaign with the late Joseph E. Robert, Jr.
The prize is named for philanthropist and business leader Joseph E. Robert, Jr., whose generosity and vision helped transform Children’s National into a medical and research system with international reach. His philanthropic support helped create the Joseph E. Robert, Jr. Center for Surgical Care, and he was instrumental in building support to establish the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation.
