Costco Swings for Healthier Futures for Children’s National Families

In our monthly Corporate Partner Spotlight, we interview leaders about what inspires them to serve as advocates for children’s health. This month, we spoke with Shelby Chapins and Danika Scowcroft, co-chairs of the Costco Wholesale Northeast Charity Classic. 

 

Costco Wholesale has proudly partnered with Children's Miracle Network Hospitals for 38 years. In the Northeast region, the 19^th annual golf tournament returns May 13-14 to benefit Children’s National Hospital. Now through May 31, Costco invites customers to support their local children’s hospital through an annual warehouse campaign. Since 2014, Costco has also generously sponsored the Race for Every Child 5K Run/Walk.

 

How has the Costco Wholesale Northeast Charity Classic grown over the years?

 

Shelby: I take great pride in the growth of this golf tournament since its inception in 2006. We have many dedicated vendors that show up each year and support. In 2021, we started honing availability for golf participation, which increased our donations substantially. During the last 13 years, we went from raising $550,000 to a remarkable $2.5 million through this event. 

 

What’s the most rewarding part of working with Children’s National? 

 

Danika: Meeting families profoundly impacted by the exceptional care at Children's National always inspires me. Helping make that care possible—for kids, their families and our community—is incredibly fulfilling and motivates me to keep going.

 

What is the greatest lesson you learned from your time partnering with the hospital? 

 

Shelby: Every dollar we raise truly helps save children’s lives, including through groundbreaking research. It is an honor to witness and play a role to support. 

 

What personally inspires you to keep giving back to Children’s National?

 

Shelby: My work to support Children’s National carried even more meaning when I became a mother. Knowing there was somewhere I could go if anything should ever happen to my son made my years of fundraising much more personal.

 

Danika: As a mom of two, I know the value of a village to raise children. I firmly believe that community plays a vital role in that support system. By giving back to Children's National, I aim to ensure every family can access expert care and lifesaving research.
